How to attract a hummingbird

Hi it's me Lindsay again. I have had some requests for hummingbirds so here it is. Anyone can attract hummingbirds even people like my friend Maxine who doesn't live in the country. Most important with hummingbirds is RED, they love red. Second is to start early. March is a good time for the southerners and April for the north, since once they find their feeding site for the season it is very hard to get them away from it. Almost any store has feeders you can buy and hummingbird food. If the feeder doesn't have a lot of red on it add more , like a red ribbon. The plastic red ribbon that surveyors use work really good because they reflect the ultraviolet rays of the sun . The hummingbirds like this and it attracts them.

When you are first trying to attract hummingbirds keep your feeders far from your house. Somewhere that the hummingbirds can see them easily and they won't be scared by you..As the hummingbirds start to come you can slowly move the feeders closer to your house so you can see them.

You must clean feeders every 5-7 days in order to prevent the growth of bacteria. If it is very hot change it every 2-3 days or if the water is cloudy. Throw away the old solution and clean the feeder well with hot water. Do not use soap or detergent. You can clean it using a vinegar solution and uncooked rice . Put both in and shake it.. Empty or dirty feeders can cause hummingbirds to move to other feeders.

In addition to your feeder, it is important to also give them natural nectar sources (flowers and vines) and areas where insects live, such as bushes and unmowed grasses Lots of people ask which hummingbird feeder works best. I have almost 5 different kinds and the humminbirds seem to like the one pictured below followed by my window feeder. It may be that they have perches which they can sit and drink . But they hover there sometimes too

The hummingbird moth

Many people think these moths are baby hummingbirds, they hover like hummingbirds drinking nectar

Hummingbird Food
The recipe to make your own hummingbird food is one part sugar to four parts water. You need to boil the water first, then add the sugar and mix it well and let it cool. Do not add any dyes or food coloring there should be enough red on the feeder to attract them.

Hummingbird Garden

Another good thing to do to attract hummingbirds is to plant a hummingbird garden. I am planting one too, the flowers I am planting are Zinnias, Marigolds, Cornflowers, Salvia Coccineas, Cosmos, and Snapdragons. ( Burpee seed company sells this mixture in a premade package with all the seeds you will need,)Trumpet vines work great too.

Fun Hummingbird Facts

An interesting facts that maybe even your parents don't know is that a hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards. They are the only bird that can hover like a helicopter in one spot.
