Hi Alex! You are lucky to have seen a flying squirrel! They are usually seen only at night. Your best chance at seeing him again is to set up a nest box and a feeder. Make the entrance hole 1-3/8" diameter. I will add flying squirrels to my page soon. E-mail me for more on attracting flying squirrels. Good Luck! Lindsay

Lindsay,

I am VERY impressed with your site. I want to compliment you on the accuracy of your information. You obviously live in a wonderfully caring and creative family! Harvard will be lucky to get you! I have no doubt you'll make it!

I have been attracting wildlife to my home since I was very little... (that was a lo-o-o-ong time ago!) My Mom and Dad spent most of their time outdoors, and they taught me to love ALL the critters! Yes, even bats! Aren't they wonderful?

Right now, I attract birds, butterflies, bats, chipmunks, groundhogs, gray foxes, skunks, squirrels, Great Horned owls, Screech owls, possums, an occasional bobcat, snakes, and about 30 raccoons. The raccoons are my favorite animals! They are SO intelligent. I love the time I spend observing them. I wish I had deer in my area. When I was little, I lived on a farm with lots of deer.

I do have one very special visitor to my yard that you don't have... Black Bears! I don't feed them! They just walk across my front porch to let me know they are there, then they search my yard for ants or blueberries, or to raid one of my birdfeeders. They let me walk around with them in the woods. Sometimes, they just sit on a rock and look out at the view! It's such an incredible experience!

Keep up the good work! I'm jealous that you are only 10 years old and have made such a fabulous web page! If I knew anything about computers, I would make a page about all my wild friends! Until then, I'll just keep coming back to yours to see what you have added.

Hi, Lindsay, enjoyed your website! Looks like you've put a bunch of work into it. It's great to see a youn person interested in something real, instead of alien movies. Have you tried feeding your foxes dog food? They like it, but the reccoons do, too, and are usually able to scare off the foxes. I'm buying a home computer with a scanner soon, maybe I can come back and post one of my bird pictures.

Dear Linda, I love bald eagles so much but I wanted to know more about it. I read the information and saw the pictures. But one of the pictures appear but all of the sudden disapears so I printed all of them except when I tried to print the one that disapered it would be a sheet that was only a little black parts. So try to fix it and if it were a grade I would give you an A+

You have a real interesting sight. We have alot of bats. They come every year and live under the siding of house. I just don`t like when they come into the house, drives me crazy. Our cat catches and kills them which I don`t like, but she is doing what comes natural I guess. Our hummingbirds are coming now too, so I have to get the food out. Anyhow nice to see something interesting out there.

Dear Lindsay,

I'm so glad to have found your web-site! I'm having a problem at my home - I think a racoon or possibly a skunk has bouroughed under my house! I called our exterminator and he said that ANIMAL CONTROL would trap and then kill the animal. I don't want that to happen to the little animal. Can you make any suggestions on how to go about scaring the animal away without injuring it? I would really appreciate your help on this one. Thanks you. Darin

Lindsey, you are amazing! You are a very "old" ten! We live in New Jersey too, on the edge of the Pinelands, and are certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Backyard Habitat. I'm sure you know all about that. While I enjoy all wildlife,my focus is on birds and reptiles. There are two man-made ponds on our property and it is fun to see the bullfrogs. We have snakes too but they are pretty shy. My favorite is the Eastern Hognose. Maybe you can tell me how to attract more snakes? There are plenty of toads and voles arround for them to eat, but I rarely see a rat snake anymore. I like your web site so much I am going to tell my little nieces about it. They are ages three and five and are already into "bugs" and gardening. Yes, I can see you going to Harvard, "Madame President"!!! Good Luck, Ruthie

Enjoyed your site! It's nice for a young lady to be so thorough and innovative in pursuing her interests. I live in Colorado, and have a lot of fox squirrels in the back that were first attracted to our bird feeders. Now I put out oil sunflower seeds and peanuts for the squirrels, but blue jays and magpies also enjoy them. A pair of flickers enjoy a cylindrical peanut feeder made from hardware cloth. My special favorite squirrels, mainly the nursing females that eat ravenously take pecans from my hand at the patio door. I crack them so that they will eat them and not bury them. We have to keep the food in chained metal containers to keep raccoons from getting into them. There are a number of foxes in the neighborhood, even though it is a subdivision. Last year a mother fox raised 5 kits under the porch across the street. We welcome the foxes, but constantly hope that they don't catch our squirrels! Best wishes to you.

We found a baby squirrel in front of our main door at our Seminary and noticed that it is weak and shaky, probably cold. So, I got on the internet and looked up "squirrel". This is how I found your website...I just glanced, but is nice to know it is here! :-)

Do you have any tidbits for us to help this baby squirrel? Will popcorn kernels be ok? Milk? We turned a bird house sideways, for some kind of "shelter".

Thanks! Lori

I enjoyed your site very much....You have a lot of knowledge and it's nice you're willing to share. I have a mother raccoon coming to eat...I can't wait till she brings the babies. It's now getting toward the end of June, so I expect them soon.

It's been my obervation that nursing mothers will come out during the day to feed. Do you think they're famished from the drain from nursing their brood or do you think they don't want to leave the babies at night because of predators?

Happy animal watching!

Hi Lindsay! Here I am in New Zealand, admiring and enjoying your website very much! You must be such a busy girl! New Zealand doesn't have many of the animals you attract, such as raccoons, foxes, skunks, chipmunks, squirrels......so I enjoyed those photos! Like you I love deer, and have only twice seen wild deer up close when out walking in forests. What an experience! Keep up the great work and know that what you are doing is really important. Thanks for you website. It's fantastic! I love the information on bats. I bought a nice bat house, but it never seemed to attract bats, and now I know why. I placed it on our porch, not open enough a place for them. I have caught three bats with nets that flew into a large mansion in Saratoga Springs. The trick is to have several people try to chase the bat into a smaller room, then close off the room. Keep the bat flying as long as possible without resting, until the lactic acid builds up and it "faints" from exhaustion and comes to a rest on its own. Then carefully scoop it up in a net and take it outside and release it. They usually are recovered enough to take off immediately. I have a house in Tahoe and see them at night and would like to have one serve as my personal mosquito catcher, hence, the bat house I bought. Thanks again for this great site. Fun!

Thank you Lindsey In searching sites about Bats I found yours. I am very excited to find so much more on your site. I am sharing your address to all of my nieces and nephews as well as there parents. As a master carpenter I can build just about anything, but when it came to building a bat house I just didn't know how. Thanks to you I can build one for myself and show my neices and nephews how they can to. I'll be sure to tell them you taught me first. Goes to show you even adults have a lot to learn.

Thanks again

You're teaching people great things about wildlife and hoow to keepp it alive. I grew up in Europe, where everywhere you looked there would be forests and lakes. It's beautiful there. When you compare that with New Jersey it scares me. People are constantly building new buildings and they never think about those trees that are being cut down! With every tree gone, polution in the air increases, and every new generation of people born has more problems and new diseases because of this. Keep on doing this!!!

I found your site through the cybersurfari. I came back to it because I am interested in backyard wildlife, especially birds. I have increased my number of birdfeeders this summer and I am having a great time watching the birds. I have lots of gold finches, house finches, purple finches, red winged blackbirds, and brown headed cowbirds. Also, I sometimes see cedar waxwings, grosbeaks, and steller's jays. I will enjoy visiting your site often. Your pictures are wonderful.

Hey, Lindsay! I think your Website is amazing. I'm so impressed. I was looking for information on Red Foxes, and your site was the most helpful to me. We have some foxes who have recently moved in to the neighborhood, and part of our yard (the part where our dog can't go) has apparently been marked as their territory. I've grown tired of the droppings and little critter remains strewn about, and wondered if I should worry about my dog (I've seen the foxes during the day, and, not knowing if they're nocturnal, worried about rabies). After seeing the question that someone else had for your Dad, and your Dad's response, all my questions were answered. (I'm now going to "mark" the boundaries of my territory myself) I just think it's a great thing that you've been encouraged to nurture your interest in backyard wildlife, and have been able to maintain this Website. It's very informative, easy to use, and the pictures are great. My hat is off to you. I've bookmarked your home page, and plan to visit the site often, as I am interested in having as much backyard wildlife at my house as possible. Thanks so much! Carrie Gregory

We have just moved into a new home and have a large yary filled with trees. We have just put out a bird feeder and a hummingbird feeder. We see so many types of birds that we took to the internet to see if we could learn how to take care of them. I came across your web sit this evening and copied much material from it. I will be checking it regularly. Our bird feeder attracts mostly cardinals, a few woodpeckers, and some small birds. Our hummingbird feeder attrated birds the first day. Luck.

HI LINDSAY. ENJOYED YOUR WEBPAGE. SOUNDS LIKE YOU WOULD LOVE TO LIVE AT MY HOUSE. WE HAVE A 100+ YEAR OLD BARN AND HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING 5 BABY FOXES RAISED THERE THIS SPRING. THE DEN WAS UNDER THE FLOOR OF A ROOM IN THE BACK OF THE BARN WITH A RAISED FLOOR. PERFECT FOR A DEN. ALTHOUGH REALLY CUTE AND CHARMING, BABY FOXES CAN BE A REAL NUISANCE! THEY TRASHED THE BARN. POOPED ALL OVER EVERYTHING! SMELLED THE WHOLE PLACE UP. GOT IN THE DONKEY'S FEED TROUGH, ATE THE CRUMBS AND THEN POOPED IN THE TROUGH. WE TRIED TO IGNORE THEM SO THEY WOULDN'T GET TAME AND LEARN TO TRUST HUMANS BUT THE LITTLE DEVILS WOULD COME UP TO THE HOUSE IN THE EVENINGS, LAY UP ON THE PICNIC TABLE ON THE PATIO AND HELP THEMSELVES TO THE APRICOTS WE HAD PICKED AND WERE RIPENING ON THE TABLE. THEY WEREN'T THE LEAST BIT AFRAID OF MY 3 POODLES OR THE BARN CAT EITHER. THEY HELPED THEMSELVES TO THE POOR BARN CAT'S FOOD ALSO. BEFORE I DISCOVERED THE FOXES WERE THERE I WAS THINKING THAT OLD CAT SURE WAS EATING A LOT OF FOOD. THE BABY FOXES ARE GROWN NOW AND WENT OUT ON THEIR OWN ALTHOUGH I STILL WILL SEE ONE FROM TIME TO TIME TROLLING THRU THE BARN OR CRUISING ACROSS THE PASTURE. WELL, I GUESS I'LL JUST SIT BACK NOW AND WAIT UNTIL NEXT SPRING WHEN THE INVASION OF THE BABY FOXES HAPPENS AGAIN.

GREETINGS LINDSAY! YOUR WEBSITE IS TERRIFIC. I RAN ACROSS IT WHILE SEARCHING FOR INFO ON RED FOXES. WE HAD A FAMILY OF RED FOXES THAT MADE THEIR DEN UNDERNEATH THE RAISED FLOOR IN A ROOM IN THE BACK OF OUR 75+ YEAR OLD BARN. WE TRIED TO IGNORE THEM AND NOT BOTHER THEM SO THEY WOULD NOT BECOME TAME AND LOSE THEIR FEAR OF MAN BUT TO NO AVAIL. THEY GOT SO BOLD THEY WOULD COME RIGHT UP TO US AND OUR DOGS. THEY ALSO LIKED TO COME UP TO THE HOUSE AND LAY ON THE PICNIC TABLE ON THE PATIO AND EAT THE APRICOTS WE HAD PICKED AND PUT ON THE TABLE TO RIPEN. BEFORE I REALIZED THEY WERE THERE, I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHY THE OLD BARN CAT WAS EATING SO MUCH CATFOOD! THEY LOVED THE CATFOOD. AS INTERESTING AND ADORABLE AS THEY WERE, WHEN SUMMER CAME AND THEY FINALLY STRUCK OUT ON THEIR OWN, WE WERE RELIEVED. OUR BARN WAS TRASHED. THEY FROLICKED ALL THROUGH THE BARN KNOCKING THINGS ALL OVER THE PLACE. THERE WERE FOX FECES ALL OVER THE PLACE AND THE SMELL WAS LESS THAN INVITING! OCCASIONALLY I WILL STILL SEE ONE SNOOPING AROUND THE BARN OR CRUISING THRU THE PASTURE. EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE A TERRIBLE NUISANCE I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT SPRING TO SEE IF WE GET OUR LITTLE BARN VISITORS AGAIN! TAKE CARE AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, KIDDO, I CAN TELL, YOU ARE GOING TO DO GREAT THINGS IN YOUR LIFE.

Lindsay, I downloaded your(and your Dad's) directions for building a bat box sometime last year. I finally got around to building 3 of them a couple of months ago. Mounted one on the back side of my house, under the eve & the other two in trees down by the creek. My question now is, how do I attract the bats I see flying around my house into the homes that I've built?? See'm flying every nite, but none in the boxes!! :( Please e-mail me with Y'r response. Ken ps by the way I'm a 54 yr old retired man just doing his thing. Got 2 daughters(28 & 16), 2 grandkids(4 & 6)

This is a cool site but you need to put on something about the black tailed deer because you have something on the white tailed deer but not the black tailed. But thanks anyways.

Enjoyed your spot, especially about butterflies since right now on the coast of Texas we have so many monarchs on their way to Mexico and beyond. Thanks for a great site.
